Our Network / For Senior Professionals

A senior advisory practice, without leaving home.

Straits Advisory Group maintains a vetted network of U.S.-based senior advisors — former diplomats, trade negotiators, economists, defense and intelligence alumni, and regional executives — who counsel American institutions on the geopolitics and economics of Singapore and Southeast Asia. We are now accepting applications for the 2026 cohort.

§ 01 — Candidacy Who we look for

Depth of experience. A counselor's temperament.

"We are not assembling a speaker's bureau. We are assembling the people our clients call before they decide."
  • i.
Fifteen years or more, spent on the region

Careers in diplomacy, trade negotiation, economic policy, defense or intelligence, regional banking and industry — with genuine Singapore or ASEAN fluency, not a passing posting.

  • ii.
The ability to say what a board needs to hear

Our clients are executives, investors, and boards. Advisors who can compress a career of context into a thirty-minute call — candidly, without hedging — are worth ten analysts.

  • iii.
    Discretion as a default

Most engagements are confidential. Advisors who treat confidentiality as a professional obligation — not a suggestion — fit here.

  • iv.
A few hours, on your terms

Whether you are fully retired, semi-retired, or still serving where obligations permit, we match the cadence to your calendar — and you confirm every engagement.

§ 02 — The Work What engagements look like

Focused questions. Senior answerers. Short runways.

/ A

Advisory calls

Thirty to sixty minutes with a client team on a live decision. Context arrives in advance; you bring the judgment. Often the highest-value hour of our clients' month.

/ B

Project advisory

Multi-week counsel embedded in a defined workstream — a market entry, a diligence, a tariff strategy — with a Singapore-desk analyst at your side.

/ C

Written assessments

Two-to-six page memos on a named question, drafted on your schedule with research support from the desk. The form our clients forward to their boards.

/ D

Briefings & delegations

Board and C-suite briefings, and — for those who travel — delegation programs in Singapore and roundtables with regional operators.

§ 03 — Structure Engagement tiers

Three ways to serve. One clean set of economics.

Advisors select the tiers that suit them and may move between them. Compensation is agreed before every engagement, invoiced monthly, and paid on time.

Tier What it looks like Typical commitment
Consulting Advisor Advisory calls and short consultations, matched to your expertise. The natural starting tier for most new advisors. A few hours per month
Project Advisor Named on a defined client workstream for its duration, working alongside a Singapore-desk analyst. Multi-week, episodic
Retained Counsel An ongoing relationship with a small number of clients — a standing call, first sight of the morning brief, quarterly depth. By arrangement, quarterly cadence

What the firm handles for you

Engagement letters, scope and fee negotiation, invoicing and collections, conflicts checks, and compliance — the unglamorous machinery of advisory work, run from the Singapore desk so your time goes to the counsel itself.

What you keep

Your independence, your calendar, your voice. Advisors may hold board seats, teaching posts, and other commitments — subject only to the conflict standards described in the FAQ below.

§ 04 — Questions Advisor FAQ

The questions we hear most.

What does the time commitment actually look like?
Most advisors contribute two to six hours a month. Engagements cluster around your expertise, so preparation is rarely more than a short brief from the desk. You confirm or decline each request — a decline carries no penalty and no follow-up.
How are advisors compensated?
At senior professional rates, agreed in writing before each engagement. Hourly for calls, fixed-fee for projects and memos, quarterly arrangements for retained counsel. Invoices are submitted monthly through the firm and paid within thirty days.
I'm still employed. Can I join?
Many advisors are. Where your obligations permit, we clear each engagement category with you in advance and conflict-check every request before it reaches you. Retired Foreign Service, military, and career officials should review applicable post-employment rules with their counsel — the firm supports that review and structures engagements accordingly.
How are client conflicts handled?
Every engagement is checked against a register of advisor affiliations before it is offered. If a request touches an organization you are affiliated with, you will not see it. The register is refreshed at onboarding and confirmed with you annually.
Do I need to be in Singapore?
No — the network is U.S.-based by design. The Singapore desk handles research, logistics, and client management in the region's time zone. Travel is optional and arises mainly for delegation programs, for which advisors receive separate invitations.
Is my involvement public?
Your choice. Most engagements are confidential and advisors are never named without consent. Advisors who wish to be listed — many find it a graceful public profile after government service — appear on the roster with a short biography.
What is the application timeline?
Applications are reviewed weekly by a founding partner. If there may be a fit, we schedule the forty-five minute call within a fortnight. Vetting, reference conversations, and onboarding typically complete within four weeks — first engagements often arrive sooner.
